GEORGE TOWN: The National Consumer Day celebrations on Saturday will be moderate, with little fanfare and no gimmicks and special effects.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the focus this year will be on the winners of various competitions organised by the ministry, including the Tokoh Kepenggunaan (exemplary consumer).
"We want the winners to tell their stories as to how they go about spending their money in a moderate way, yet enjoying a good lifestyle.
"They are the heroes and we want to hear from them."
He stressed that this was not a belt-tightening measure.
Shahrir said usually about RM5 million was spent on the Consumer Day celebrations, "but this time, we are reducing it to about RM2 million".
