GEORGE TOWN: The state government and Boustead Penang Shipyard Sdn Bhd will work together to repair the jetty at Batu Maung on which some 50 fishermen depend.
Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kasim said it was badly damaged when a ferry ran into it while berthing on Saturday afternoon.
"The jetty was already in a deplorable state," he said after a working visit to the jetty yesterday. "We have instructed Boustead to begin repair works immediately as the fishermen's livelihood depends on this jetty."
Also present was Boustead Penang Shipyard Sdn Bhd general manager Yeoh Keong Hoe.
Malik said he had earlier raised the issue of the jetty's condition with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, adding that "we were already discussing how to repair the jetty".
"We will also be speaking to South Bay Sdn Bhd, which is developing the land adjacent to the jetty, to see how best it can help us to repair the jetty.
The cost of repairs was estimated at RM2,000 to RM3,000.
