Life’s a work of art

A Malaysian graphic artist makes it as a finalist in a reality show in the US, writes R.S. KAMINI

WHILE most graphic designers are happy to be backstage, Parmilla Gnanasegaran decided to reveal everything.

The 29-year-old Malaysian was recently selected as one of 10 finalists of the new reality show, CMYK America’s Next Top Graphic Designer.

Following the worldwide success of reality shows ranging from American Idol and America’s Next Top Model to The Apprentice, the United States has moved into niche areas such as graphic designing.

The show features talented designers who will conceptualise, design and execute business projects.

The finalists compete for US$50,000 (RM175,000) and a chance to work with one of the Fortune 500 companies in the US.

Parmilla is the only Asian — and Malaysian — who made the list after going through several competitive and fast-paced elimination rounds.

The 10 were chosen from a pool of 68 semi-finalists to compete during the first season of the show which is expected to air in the US early next year.

Fame may well be in store for Parmilla but she only believes in one mantra — talent and hard work coupled with prayers and determination can work wonders in any part of the world.

“Most talented graphic designers are not recognised because they are not at the forefront of any publications or productions. America’s Next Top Graphic Designer is a great avenue to let the world know how designs can tell a story,” says Parmilla.

Five of her designs were shortlisted for the competition. Parmilla was nominated for Best Album Cover Design in the 2004 Malaysian Music Industry Awards and won a few ADDY Advertising Awards early this year for Best Logo and Best Campaign designs in the US. Parmilla, who recently emigrated to the US, works with an established advertising firm in California. She worked with New Straits Times for three years before moving there.

“When I first heard about America’s Next Top Graphic Designer, I decided to try my luck since it was up my alley. I wanted to see where I stood in the design world, especially here (US), where competition is toughest.

“I am aware of what I may be getting myself into but I am aiming for experience, exposure and recognition in the graphic designing field here.” Parmilla believes that being chosen as a finalist could be a stepping stone to something bigger in the US.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine being one of top 10 graphic designers in America. This is a huge achievement for me.” Parmilla sees her success as an incentive for young Malaysians to pursue their dreams.

“Life is a work of art designed by the one who lives it.” You can check out Parmilla’s work at www.wix.com/gparmilla/parmilla and get details on the reality show and other finalists at www.cmykamerica.com
