NN GALLERY presents a solo exhibition by Malaysian abstract artist Ng Foo Cheong titled “Circle And The Square” from Oct 10 to Nov 7.
The exhibition will feature his latest works using a combination of plaster of Paris and acrylics on canvas.
Ng’s new works see the use of decorative motifs found in East Asian cultures and celebrate the inherent cross-cultural, religious and spiritual meanings of these emblems.
The theme "Circle And The Square" is based on an ancient Chinese riddle of geometry and is derived from a complex understanding of proportion and the principal of design that heaven is a circle and the world is a square.
This principal also speaks of emptiness and form, and spirit and matter.
Ng, in his travels around Asia, has drawn upon the mysteries that surround balance in classical Chinese design and proportion in buildings, and its relationship and influence on neighbouring countries.
He taps upon shapes, patterns, designs and architectural forms to create a personal translation of symbolic readings.
His technique of applying plaster on canvas before paint creates added perspective and dimension.
This lifts colours and allows multiple layerings of paint on canvas.
His mastery of this technique allows the viewer to appreciate the many tones and qualities of a singular colour, that resonate in the multiple meanings of his emblems.
The new series is dominated by the colour red for its auspicious connotations.
The paintings present a striking focus and richness, assuming a jewel-like effect that allows for contemplation and meditation.
The exhibition also presents a series of large scale Tangkas inspired by his recent travels to Tibet.
NN Gallery is in Jalan Sulaiman 1, Taman Ampang Hilir, Ampang, Selangor. Time: 9am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday. Call 03-4270-6588.
