Baroque treats

2009/10/30

Compiled by Dennis Chua

ENJOY spellbinding performances by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), KLCC at 8.30pm on Nov 7 and 3pm on Nov 8.

Under the baton of Bernard Labadie, the MPO will present a dose of Baroque music in Three Baroque Treats.

It features the works of master composers Johan Sebastian Bach and Jean-Philippe Rameau.

The first work to be presented is Bach’s Suite No. 3, first performed between 1729 and 1731 by Leipzig’s Collegium Musicum, a student orchestra.

The MPO will also perform Bach’s Arias and Rameau’s Dardanus, a “tragedy” opera first performed in Paris in 1739.

The guest performer is Swedish soprano Malin Christensson. She has performed in London, Paris, New York, Vienna, Cologne, Stockholm and at the Lucerne and Daytona festivals. She has also collaborated with the London Symphony, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Radio Orchestra.

Tickets are priced at RM85, RM65, RM40 and RM20.

Meanwhile, the MPO will perform excerpts from popular opera Carmen at 8.30pm today and 3pm tomorrow.

The orchestra will collaborate with tenor Thiago Arancam and mezzo-soprano Mireille Lebel.

Brazilian Arancam debuted at Teatro La Scalla, Milan singing concert arias from famous operas such as Tosca and Madame Butterfly.

The award-winning Arancam has also performed in many Brazilian theatres. Lebel is fast becoming one of Canada’s most sought-after mezzo-sopranos. Her repertoire spans from Monteverdi to the music of the 21st century.

Tickets are priced at RM95, RM75, RM55 and RM25 on Saturday, and RM85, RM65, RM40 and RM20 on Sunday.
