Three die in Kinabatangan accident

KINABATANGAN: A couple and a relative died when the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry at Km 114 Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu in Kampung Paris 1 here today.

The three died at the scene while the lorry driver sustained minor injuries in the 1pm incident.

The three are identified as Kangut Gambut, 49, his wife Rupiah Saidi, 48, and Kangut's younger brother Stanley, 24, the driver of the car.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad said nine firemen and two fire engines from the Lahad Datu station were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the emergency call at 1.04pm.

The firemen took 30 minutes to retrieve the bodies from the wreck Proton Waja, he said.

He said the three were heading towards Lahad Datu from Kinabatangan while the lorry was travelling from the opposite direction.

He said the bodies had been sent to Kinabatangan Hospital. - Bernama
