Govt withdraws inspection rule for old vehicles

2009/11/07

By Azlan Abu Bakar

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has withdrawn the end-of-life policy for vehicles after taking into account the people’s views and feedback.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry, in a statement issued yesterday, said the government had received many complaints from various quarters on
the policy, which was announced on Oct 28 as part of the National
Automotive Policy (NAP).

There was widespread disagreement over the mandatory annual inspection for vehicles older than 15 years before their road tax could be renewed.

Among the main grouses was the additional cost that the affected owners had to incur to have their cars inspected every year.

The phasing out of older vehicles in other countries is normally accompanied by some form of subsidy or incentive to ease the burden.

The announcement came two days after Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government was willing to review the new NAP regulations that had a negative impact on the public.
