Flood creates second wave in Kedah

ALOR STAR: Eighty two families comprising 352 persons in the districts of Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap were forced to move again into flood evacuation centres when their areas were inundated after heavy rain yesterday evening.

A spokesman for the state flood operations room, when contacted by Bernama, said 54 people from 12 families in the Padang Terap district and 298 people from 70 families in the Kubang Pasu district were directed to evacuate about 7pm on Friday when river waters in the area overflowed beyond the danger level.

"For the district of Padang Terap, the water level of Sungai Kuala Nerang was 16.94m (danger level 16.15m) and Sungai Kampung Kubu's level was 12.7m (danger level 12.2m) while in the Kubang Pasu district the water level for Sungai Kongluang was 13.65m (danger level 13.20m) and for Sungai Temin 14.9m (danger level 14.68m)," he said.

He said two evacuation centres were opened in Padang Terap which were the Dewan Kampung Kubu and the Dewan Orang Ramai Kuala Pai while for the Kubang Pasu district four centres were re-opened. They are Dewan Kampung Lahar, Dewan Kampung Kubang Betung, Dewan Orang Ramai Mak Pap and the Pelubang plant quarters.

Meanwhile, in the Kota Star district, there were only 28 families comprising 109 people in two evacuation centres at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kepala Batas and Sekolah Kebangsaan Titi Gajah.


"Two rivers in that district are still above danger levels. They are Sungai Kepala Batas at 3.70m (danger level 3.5m ) and Sungai Pantai Johor 2.17m (danger level 1.7m)," he said.

The total number of flood victims in Kedah are 461 people from 110 families as of 11am. -- Bernama
