KUALA LUMPUR: The third force in MCA has called for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s intervention to resolve the worsening party crisis.
It wants Najib, together with party veterans Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Michael Chen Wing Sum, to help end the crisis.
Dr Ling was the party president for 17 years while Chen had the most grassroots support during the past MCA crises.
Spokesman Datuk Tan Kah Choun said the move should not be seen as Umno interfering in MCA issues.
“The prime minister should meet them as both (Dr Ling and Chen) have vast experience in handling and managing the party,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
Various quarters have called for the prime minister’s intervention to put a halt to the party crisis, but Najib had said that if he was to come in, it must be on the request of the party itself.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters after feting the Malaysian contingent to the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2009 at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya
yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Barisan Nasional leaders would only come in if a majority of the party’s central committee members agreed to it.
He stressed that when that happens, the onus would be on MCA to accept any formula the leaders come up with for the sake of unity and stability of the party.
“Both the prime minister and I have said that we do not want to interfere. We hope that the MCA leaders could quickly find a solution to this long-standing crisis.
“But if the party feels it is difficult to settle the problem among themselves, and that they need the help of a middleman, the prime minister and I are willing to play that role.”
Muhyiddin acknowledged that the problem in MCA is messy and must be resolved fast. Asked if MCA risked being de-registered if the problem persisted, Muhyiddin said many problems could arise for the party if it continued
that way.
“We don’t want anything drastic to happen to the party and to prevent that, we have to resolve this problem by all means.”
The third force is also nowsupportive of the greater unity plan with party president Datuk Seri OngTee Keat and deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek leading the party.
“At first, we rejected both Ong and Chua. They were weakening the party. But now, both hold hands for greater unity. If that is good for the party, why not?”Tan said.
He said the dramatic change of events between the two top leaders showed there were no permanent friends or enemies in politics. Without naming the people backing the third force, he said the members also wanted party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to adapt to the changes for the sake of the
party.
They have also rejected the second extraordinary general meeting to be held on Nov 25. Tan said the central delegates were tired and fed up with the second EGM which fell one week before the annual general meeting on
Dec 5. He said out of the 16 central committee members who initiated the second EGM, four had been sacked while another three were now in support of the unity plan.
“Less than one-third support the second EGM. I am not asking anyone to boycott it but we want everyone to work hand-in-hand for the good image of the party.

Liong YC:
I find the suggestions by Datuk Tan Kah Choun totally intriguing.
The Datuk urged the Prime Minister to 'meet up' with and 'get the opinions' of some 11 veteran MCA leaders to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Come on, Datuk! Give the Prime Minister some honour and credit. He knows how to manage and resolve crisis without your prompting. If he needs the opinions of any of
these veteran leaders, he can just 'call' them up to his office in Putrajaya. He needs not have to 'meet up' with them. Meet where? At the MCA HQ?
To add salt to the wound, Datuk further suggested that if the Prime Minister was unable to meet with these veterans, he should at least meet up with Dr. Ling who had been a president for 17 years and also to talk to Tan Sri Michael Chen. Are these veteran MCA leaders so 'great and mighty' that even the Prime Minister can't be sure if they will come forth when called?
More unbelieving! The Datuk went on to recommend that if the above measures failed, the Prime Minister should obtain the opinion of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who had successfully resolved at least three MCA crises. Please have some respect and trust for the present Prime Minister. You don't go to some one for
help and yet say at the onset that you will go somewhere else if that someone fails in helping!
What Datuk really achieve in that press conference is: he shows himself to be aligned to and 'safe' in the company of MCA veteran leaders, the present Prime Minister and a former Prime Minister. A 'third-force' or 'three-force' spokesman and survivor indeed!
