Kien Keat, Boon Heong survive

WORLD No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong survived a scare to join women’s doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui in the semi-finals of the China Open in Shanghai yesterday.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong were taken to the distance by South Korean back-up pair Shin Baek Cheol-Cho Gun Woo before coming from behind to secure a 15-21, 21-18, 21-18 in 66 minutes.


Pei Tty-Eei Hui defeated Chien Yu Chin- Wang Pei Rong of Taiwan 21-16, 21-17 in 31 minutes to maintain their top position in the Super Series ranking.


They will play Tian Qing-Zhang Yawen of China, who beat compatriots Cheng Shu-Zhao Yunlei 21-17, 21-9, in the last four today.


Kien Keat-Boon Heong, whowere eliminated by veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open last week, almost suffered the same fate as they were playing catch-up in the second and third games.


Co-incidentally, Kien Keat-Boon Heong trailed 12-16 in both games before staging their comeback and were steadier at the crucial stages to advance to the last f o u r.


The Malaysians will now play Taiwan’s Chen Hung Ling-Lin Yu Lang of Taiwan in the semi-finals today.


In the women’s singles, Wong Mew Choo found the going tough against China’s back-up shuttler Wang Shixian 21- 10, 24-22 in 45 minutes.
