Catch: Women artists depict love is beautiful

2009/11/28

ART Lives @ Planegg Studio presents “Love Is Beautiful” from Nov 28 to Dec 31. It is a group exhibition featuring the latest works of women artists Wendy Chua, Yvonne Ou Yong, Bridget Lee Sook Heng and Tan Guat Ling.
Chua describes her works as “realism tinged with impressionism”.

“It’s a symphony of brush strokes, colours and imagination,” she said in a statement recently.

While living in Europe, she was exposed to a wide spectrum of art forms, from sculptures and paintings to the performing arts.

She was particularly attracted to the powerful brush strokes of Van Gogh and the breathtaking beauty of Monet’s impressionist interpretation of landscapes.

Upon returning to Malaysia in 2003, she decided to take up oil painting under the tutelage of artist Apollo Hui.

Her first group exhibition was in 2006 at Gallery Chinwoo, Kuala Lumpur. Two years later came another at Ikano Power Centre in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya.

“My works revolved around the places I visited, such as a flower shop in Amsterdam, a tea stall in Egypt and a back lane in Beijing,” she said.

Her latest series is centred on flowers, as symbols of hope and love for humanity.

Ou Yong is an art graduate from Chelsea College Of Art And Design in London, Britain. She is also a lecturer at KBU International College and has been a professional painter for four years. Her works reflect journeys through phases of life and their many surprises and unexpected challenges.

Her well-known solo exhibitions took place at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPaC) last year and at 1 Utama in 2007. She has also exhibited her works in Seoul and London.

Lee, from Ipoh, has had her works exhibited in the National Art Gallery in 1999 and the Starhill Gallery last year and in Seoul.

Lee’s latest works are about gardens and are inspired by scripture and imagination.

Tan is a visual communication design graduate from Middlesex University in Britain. She is an art and design lecturer at KBU International College and her latest works are all about becoming a mother for the first time.

Planegg Studio is at Jalan 23/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
