LETTERS: Monitor websites

2010/02/05

I WRITE in response to the article Best Website Award published in YOU on Jan 30.
Congratulations to the Higher Education Ministry and the 210 private educational institutions which submitted the entries as their efforts will help raise the standard of education in Malaysia.

At the other end of the scale, certain websites of private learning institutions should be a matter of concern to the authorities.
I recently visited the website of a private tertiary institution, which registered more than 14 million hits, and was shocked by the poor English. It is a clear example of a cut-and-paste job as the writer does not have a proper understanding of the words and phrases used.

Ironically, this institute also conducts English classes for students and adults.

Such educators will churn out more graduates with poor language and communication skills.

This particular institute is within the purview of three ministries and yet it has managed to slip through the cracks.

Institutions of such inferior repute will tarnish the image of Malaysian education as their websites become a laughing stock in this borderless world.

The main casualty will be students who get a poor return on investment of their precious time and money. — Chan Yet Sang, Petaling Jaya
