JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department will receive 10 speedboats and 14 hand-held thermal imagers to better equip it in its anti-smuggling activities.
Customs director-general Datuk Seri Ibrahim Jaafar said the boats and thermal imagers were provided through grants worth about 714 million yen (RM25 million), received through the Japan International Corporation Agency.
Ibrahim was speaking to reporters yesterday at the handing-over ceremony of Perantas KB90, one of four high-powered interceptor boats, to the department by its manufacturer, Destination Marine Services Sdn Bhd.
The other 16.5m-long Perantas boats will be handed to the department by the end of this year. The four interceptors cost RM22.52 million.
Ibrahim said the boat would be stationed in Johor Baru while the others would be deployed to Mersing, Kuantan and Penang.
On another matter, he said round-the-clock operations at the import section of the Customs and Immigration Complex had been running smoothly since the 24-hour workday was implemented last Sunday. -- Bernama
