Drug agency won't protect staff who deal in the stuff

KUCHING: The National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) will never compromise its integrity by protecting its staff who deal with drugs, its Deputy Director-General of Operations, Prof Dr Mahmood Nazar Mohamed, said yesterday.

Referring to the arrest by police early this month of a driver who was attached to the agency here on suspicion of possessing syabu, he said the agency would not hesitate to take stern action against its staff, including prosecuting them in court.

"There must be no compromise in the war against drugs. The arrest of the driver showed that stern action is taken against our staff and they are never protected by the agency.

He was speaking to reporters yesterday after the closing of a Sarawak Anti-Drug Action Council seminar by Social Development and Urbanisation Permanent Secretary Soedirman Aini.

On Nov 5, police arrested an AADK driver who was believed to be high on syabu at Rubber Road here.

Dr Mahmood denied a news report that the driver was supplying drugs to a drug rehabilitation centre here.

He was detained for drug abuse and not as a supplier for the rehabilitation centre.

"Moreover, a large-scale operation has been conducted at the centre and nothing was found," he said, adding that the driver would be charged in court. -- Bernama
