Notable names to battle for honours

2009/11/05

TENNIS enthusiasts are in for a treat as some notable names will feature in the RM40,000 Dr Poh Soon Sim Inter-Team Cup which starts today at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The tournament will feature the likes of former Thailand winner Worapo Tongkamchoo, also the 1989 Kuala Lumpur Sea Games gold medallist, Vitaya Samrej, Indonesian ace Prima Simpati, Andrian Raturanrandang, Bonit Wirwayan and Filipino Davis Cup player John Patrick Thierro.

Among those representing Malaysian clubs are former national champion V. Selvam, Adam Jaya, Razlan Rawi and Juan Los Santos.

Tournament director Terence Chia said 10 teams will be vying for the title.

"It's our way of promoting the sport. It is also our way of bringing together as many ex-players and current players to the tournament in the hope to spur the sport," said Terence.

The competing teams are Hong Leong, KL Champs, Duta Ace, GuocoLand, Tennis Junkies, National Tennis Centre, Royal Johor (Malaysia), Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

The format of the Cup is two above-35 doubles and "Open" doubles.

Team Garuda Indonesia won the inaugural edition last year, pocketing RM20,000 for their efforts.
