SEGi reveals its game plan to success

2009/11/01

ONE of the secrets to success in business is to know how to handle challenges.

"In order to do that, you need a game plan. That's where Strategic Management comes in," says Vicknesh Thevendran, a business lecturer at SEGi University College Kuala Lumpur.

Vicknesh holds a Business Administration degree from the University of Northumbria (UK) and a MBA from Charles Stuart University (Australia). He is pursuing his doctoral research in business strategy and sustainability.

He has been lecturing for more than eight years on Strategic Management, several specialised marketing subjects and International Business covered in twinning programmes with the University of Abertay Dundee (UK), University of Greenwich (UK) and University of Southern Queensland (Australia).

Apart from degree programmes, Vicknesh also lectures at the Master's level and the ICSA professional programme with his core area of specialisation being Strategic Management and Performance Management. He has produced several award-winning research papers too.

"It is not just the subject which gives students a competitive edge in knowledge but the manner in which it is taught. In SEGi's business programmes, students are taught application of theory through analysis of relevant case studies.

"For example, I bring to their attention Air Asia's no-frills business strategy and help the students analyse what makes it so effective. They are not spoon-fed but made to think and apply whatever they have learnt through assignments which require them to do presentations.

"These regular sessions of doing presentations give them invaluable experience, increase their maturity and build their self-confidence. That is why some of our graduates are employed even before they graduate."

Vicknesh is also proud that "in the past six years SEGi KL has produced several First Class (Hons) and Second Class Upper degree holders, all of whom have established themselves in leading companies like OCBC, HSBC and Ernst and Young.

On a more personal note, he advises that "one of the best ways to succeed in business studies and a career in business is to keep things simple and have a cool head between your shoulders."

SEGi Group of Institutions has been providing business and accountancy programmes for more than 30 years.

SEGi University College in Kota Damansara has started the first enrolment for its homegrown business and accounting programmes.

The college also has a long list of 3+0 degree programmes provided in collaboration with some of the best British and Australian universities. SEGi also offers the Foundation in Commerce as well as Certificate in Business and Certificate in Business Studies. At the diploma level there are programmes for business administration, marketing, accounting and human resource management.

All these programmes are accredited by the MQA and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education.

SEGi also provides scholarships and financial aids such as 8TV Scholarship Fund, Higher Opportunity for Private Education Fund and High Achiever's Scholarship.
