PORT DICKSON: Barisan Nasional deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday doubted the efforts by the opposition to merge as one entity under Pakatan Rakyat.
He said these efforts were only for the political importance of the opposition and had no benefit for the people.
"They probably want to show that they are united but even now, after several months of ruling some states, there are problems.
"These problems involve conflicts in ideologies and other very basic issues. Pas is adamant about forming an Islamic state while the other opposition parties may feel differently.
"Will the opposition parties amend their respective party constitutions to set up Pakatan Rakyat?"
Muhyiddin was asked to comment on reports that the opposition was planning to officially register Pakatan Rakyat as a political party.
He questioned whether Pas was willing to sacrifice its ideologies and follow what the DAP wanted.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Umno deputy president, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat's ideology would also not be able to go in line with Pas and DAP.
"Experiences show that there are already disagreements in the administration of states under them.
"In Selangor, state Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali does not agree with DAP while in Kedah, the DAP does not agree with the menteri besar. It is the same in Penang."
