German sprinter Pollack tests positive

2009/09/18

BERLIN: Germany's Olaf Pollack has tested positive for an unnamed banned substance, according to the German cycling federation (BDR) yesterday.

The BDR said that Pollack has been provisionally suspended after a sample from a random doping control at the start of July tested positive for the banned substance.

Pollack has asked for a B sample to be analysed.

The 35-year-old German, a sprint specialist who competed for Germany in the team pursuit at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, began his professional road career with Gerolsteiner in 2000, moving to T-Mobile in 2005 for two years.

After the German team folded in the wake of the doping controversy which surrounded their star rider Jan Ullrich, Pollack moved to a non-Pro Tour team, Team-Wiesenhof.

The BDR meanwhile announced that another cyclist, Marcus Cronjager, tested positive for an unnamed substance on July 11. He has waived his right to have a B sample analysed. -- AFP
