SEREMBAN: Playing one chess game is draining enough. What about 88 games at the same time?

That is what Collin Madhavan, a candidate master, will attempt when he takes on 88 players in the RB Land Simultaneous Chess Challenge 2008 on Sunday at the RB Land office in Seremban 2, near here.

The challenge will be a Malaysia Book of Records-attempt by double record holder Collin who is also the current record holder at playing against 71 players. One expert player challenging several players at the same time is called Chess Simultaneous.

The challenge is open to the public and is intended to bring chess activities to Negri Sembilan.

This Seremban series attempts to set a record when Collin takes on 88 players.

The challenge demands a very specific chess playing skill and in this case, Collin will need to play well and remember all the games that are ongoing.

"This is very unlike the normal match where one can concentrate fully on one match at a time. Therefore, it can be said that an expert chess player may not necessarily be a good simultaneous exponent but a simultaneous exponent is definitely an expert chess player," said Collin.

Collin has played for the Malaysian chess team from 1989 to 1994 and is also an experienced chess coach and has been training players, both adults and students since 1978.

From 1990 - 1996, he trained under the late grandmaster Eduard Gufeld.

His motto in life is that everyone should be given an opportunity to learn and play the game of chess.

"Chess not only develops the human mind, but also helps in personal character building."

"The world record now stands at 326 players and was set by Grandmaster Susan Polgar in 2005," he said.
