KUALA LUMPUR: Team Teh Tarik edged Team Milo 6-4 in the 3 on 3 basketball final of the boys' under-12 in the SportsUnite-Milo carnival last weekend.
While the final was a keenly contested affair, the fight for third placing was one sided.
Team GBY took the bronze with an easy 8-3 victory over Team Teh O Ais.
The participating teams came from various schools in the city for the event at Batu 11 Cheras JKKK Basketball Courts.
The carnival, which saw 36 teams participating, was organised by SportsUnite-Milo. A similar event was held last year.
Each team comprised four players of at least two different races, a pre-condition to participate.
"It was wonderful to see all the boys playing together in the spirit of unity.
"They played with true sporting spirit and gave their best for their teams," said Datuk Dina Rizal, executive director of SportsUnite.
He watched the final and presented prizes to the winners.
"Sports as a unifying force must not be underestimated. It is very powerful in bringing children of different races together to enjoy each other's company.
"To us, in SportsUnite, there were no winners or losers in this event.
"Unity won and all were winners in promoting friendship and semangat setiakawan and help develop the game at grassroots.
"The quality of play at the carnival was high," he said.
"More importantly, it was the enthusiasm, energy and joy that the teams displayed that mattered.
"We are committed to organising more such events in the future and hope that sponsors and the Ministry of Youth and Sports will come in."
Dina said it would be great to see the Ministry of Education creating inter-schools sports carnivals with multi-racial teams.
He said it was one of the most effective ways to rekindle the unity culture in the Malaysian school system.
"The future of unity looks promising via sports events of this nature."
"The support from parents brings hope in rekindling the sports culture among children of different races. Everybody had a good time," he said.
