SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state goverment plans to make its industrial site
project called Selangor Science Park II, in Bukit Raja, Sepang a centre for the solar energy industry, said its Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

“We like Science Park II to focus on solar energy and solar cell activity and we have investors building their operations in Science Park II,” he told reporters after officiating the Klang Valley 2 Seminar last week. The seminar was organised by the Selangor State Investment Centre.

Science Park II which spans over 800 hectares of land is among the industrial areas developed by the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in the Klang Valley 2, the new growth area in Selangor comprising Sepang and Kuala Langat district.

By having big names in solar cell production, like Q-Cell from Germany building its factory in Science Park II, other vendors and suppliers to the company are likely to follow suit, Abdul Khalid said.

Q-Cell is expected to invest an initial RM2.6 billion and open up 40 hectares of industrial land in Science Park II to manufacture solar cell in Selangor.

It is also looking for another 60 hectares of land to expand its manufacturing facilities.

On promoting the solar energy industry, Abdul Khalid said: “It is timely becausewe are talking about saving energy cost and clean energy and environmentally accepted energy.” He said solar technologies have advanced with current solar panel sizes being smaller, thinner and with higher energy storage capacity.

Touching on the inflow of investment to Selangor this year, Abdul Khalid said for the period between January and June this year, the state attracted RM5.8 billion in investments from 129 approved projects. — Bernama
