SELAYANG: Councillors here will each receive RM20,000 for the remaining four months of the year to fund community projects in their respective z o n e s.

The 24 Selayang Municipal councillors will be allocated a total of RM480,000 based on claims made so far. The funds will be disbursed based on council guidelines which stipulate a cap of about RM5,000 per project, which would cover 24 zones within the municipality.

“The sum of RM20,000 for each of the council members includes an allocation of RM2,500 for the purchase of a laptop computer for the councillor’s use.

“The sum is given for such projects as crime prevention campaigns, gotong-royong and sports and recreation activities from Sept 1 to the end of this year,” said council president Zainal Abidin Azim at the council’s third full board meeting recently.

The funds will go towards realising the municipality’s Agenda 21, which aims to create a better quality of life for residents by generating economic activities, a healthier environment and socio-cultural development.

On a separate matter, Zainal said that the council received 5,457 complaints from the public up to July this year, with 4,839 of them classified as “r e s o l ve d ” and 618 still being looked into. This constitutes an 89 per cent success rate in attending to and resolving issues in a timely manner.

The complaints were received via the council’s 24- hour hotline 03-6138 9898, or via e-mail at selayangmesr a @ m p s. g ov. my “Officers from the various departments will be on hand to answer questions from the public during meet-the-public sessions from 8.30am to 11.30am on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the council headquar ters,” added Zainal.

The council had also addressed the threat of dengue in the area by organising fogging activities and conducting checks on various houses and business premises.

By the end of last month, fogging was conducted in the interiors of 30,730 premises and the exteriors of 112,515.

Up to July, a total of 168 compound fine were issued to owners of premises found to have breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquito.

Zainal also announced during the council meeting that a new Planning and Public Complaints committee will be formed under the Town Planning Act, 1956, to streamline the public notification of proposed developments and to receive objections to development projects made by those living close to the boundaries of the subject lots.

“The committee will not be fixed, it would be chaired by the council president, the councillor from the zone where the complaint originates and various departments of the council and other technical departments like the Public Works Department,” he said.

The committee will be under the One-Stop Centre Committee, which is supported by the council’s planning and development department, which would make recommendations to the state government planning department.

“If an appeal is granted by the developer against a decisionmadeby the state government, the developer can seek to present its case to the state gover nment’s Planning Appeal Board,” said Zainal.

He added that the main reason the committee was formed was to make sure that development was not done on a haphazard basis and forced on the public.

On the issuance of business permits in conjunction with the month of Ramadan, Zainal said that a total of 2,527 permits were issued for 16 bazaars in the district.
