STREETS MAIL: Violence becoming part of life in PJ

BATHMAVATHI KRISHNAN, Petaling Jaya
Print Article Email Article

ONE Wednesday afternoon, there was a commotion outside our usually quiet neighbourhood in Section 5, PJ. I heard raised voices and when I went to my gate to investigate, I found two men shouting at each on the road near my house. Then one of them hit and punched the other and kicked him in the groin.

The other was quite passive and was shouting back "I will pay, I will pay". Then the more aggressive one uttered a racist remark about the other.

He then called his friend on his handphone and asked him to come over. This went on for a good 20 minutes. Neighbours watching from within their compounds were gripped with fear. Luckily, some of the neighbours had alerted the police. They were there within minutes, and after some discussion, the two men followed them to the police station.

I later learnt that it was a car chase between the two men, who were not from our area, that had ended at our road, which is a dead-end road.

In my 28 years of living here, this is the first time I had witnessed such an incident. This incident has increased our sense of insecurity caused by break-ins, snatch thefts and vandalism. Fewer residents now go out for their walks and jogs. There are also many elderly and disabled persons in this neighbourhood and we certainly fear our safety. We do not have any local security patrols. We urgently need more police patrolling in our area during the daytime.
