KUALA LUMPUR: Life is hard nowadays for many traders in Jalan Burung Tiong, Taman Bukit Maluri in Kepong. And City Hall, they claim, is not making it any easier for them.

City Hall will be charging 50 sen per hour for parking at the business centre beginning tomorrow. It has appointed Godell Parking Sdn Bhd to collect the charges.

This has led some 100 irate business owners to stage a protest against the move.

Contractor Karuna Karen, a resident, said when City Hall installed the parking machines two weeks ago, it did not consult the residents.

"We have been living here for the past 30 years with no parking charges at the business area.

"But now, they want us to pay. This will add to our daily expenses," he said.

A restaurant operator, who wished to be known only as Manogeran, said the parking system would definitely affect his business as well as that of other shop owners.

"The morning market is here as well as our shops. If people have to pay to park in this small area, our business will be affected.

"We will also incur more cost as we have to pay for parking as well," he said.

Segambut member of parliament Lim Lip Eng took City Hall to task for imposing the parking charges.

"Why now after the general election? Why not before and why this small business area which caters only to residents?" he asked.

"This is affecting other areas in the city as well. I will have a meeting with the other city MPs and we will seek an explanation from the mayor."

Lim questioned the operating hours (till 10pm) of the parking scheme, which was beyond the 6pm limit, as promised by mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan.

"The mayor has got some explaining to do. The new parking system will not benefit the residents and shop owners and will be a financial burden for them."
