Market dispute ends after talks with residents

Print Article Email Article

The pasar tani (farmers' market) in Bandar Tasik Selatan was given the green light to operate by residents and City Hall.

This decision was reached after a six-hour meeting recently between the National Pasar Tani Committee, residents and City Hall officers.

The residents had claimed that there was an increase in social problems in the area because of the pasar tani.

They also claimed that the main road was congested every Tuesday and Thursday night.

The chairman of the pasar tani committee, Jamaluddin Muhammad Arshad, said no untoward incident occurred as all the traders were told by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) to control their emotions.

"Although some City Hall officers tried to stop our operations, we immediately called for a discussion to resolve the problem.

"When the meeting ended at 7pm we were allowed to operate in the area.

"We got the support of the residents who had earlier objected to the market. We will also abide by the conditions set by City Hall."

A City Hall spokesman said they were merely acting on complaints from residents and welcomed any decision agreeable to both parties.
