KUALA LUMPUR: Karen Kow Cheng Yee is the managing director of Colours In Motion and she offers consultation to housing developers, architects and corporations in areas like the use of colours.

And she says there are great, self-empowering abilities deep within us, only waiting to be discovered.

This is the thrust of Kow Cheng Yee's work in helping others to focus on a holistic understanding of how and why human beings develop their perceptions of, and reactions to, themselves and others as they negotiate their paths through life.

"With the right integration of psychology, actualisation of mind power and a great mental attitude, people can go the extra mile and achieve their aspirations," said Kow.

After working in the United Kingdom for over a year on completing her degree, she has worked with children, teenagers and adults through many facets of psychology and hypnotherapy.

Following her return to Malaysia, she worked with leading psychologists here before setting up her own counselling and relationship-building programmes.

Q: You have been referred to as a colour psychologist, tell us what it means?

A: Colour psychology deals with the reaction people have towards colour differentiation.

Colours affect all aspects of the mind whether mentally or physically and is mainly sub-consciously driven.

There are images in our minds which relate with certain colours which can be fine tuned and used in corporate image identity, to complement architecture forms and an extension of corporate identity.

For example, if I mention a hamburger and the colours of red and yellow, the mind would start to relate to McDonald's.

Colours can be used to enhance a certain mood and can improve a personality of a person and used as a motivation tool.

In application, colours with a host of other techniques can reduce hyperactivity in children and manage their attention span which normally leads to a child having a learning disorder. It can also be used to reduce migraines by shifting one's surroundings, creativity, visualisation and meditation to promote better health. Other colours encourage appetite or study.

Q: What are the frequent problems which you deal with in your practice?

A: I help people who mainly are plagued with difficulties in family relationships to challenges of stress, anger, pain and depression.

Q: What would you see as the biggest hurdle of applying psychology in Malaysia?

A: There is a strong stigma associated with the profession. It is only seen to treat mental patients, this is far from the truth.

In the West, it's used as a tool for self-development and personal growth. Psychology has been proven to be effective as a complementary treatment to mainstream medicine in stress and pain management.

Q: Tell us about your educational background?

A: Being born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, I went to a primary school in Taman Desa and secondary school at SMK Bukit Damansara.

In 2001, I completed my BSc in psychology from Cambridge University in the UK and then furthered my education to obtain my master's in metaphysical science, from the University of Metaphysical Science in California.

Q: You have been in practice for over four years now, what areas of psychology have you practised?

A: In helping clients, I apply and merge various techniques under the main science of applied cognitive and behavioural psychology. These may include complimentary therapy, energy psychology, clinical hypnotherapy, colour therapy, sound and music therapy and stress management.

It has to do with diligent planning and intuitive application of skills and knowledge across a spectrum of modalities and therapies to generate a positive response to make a difference in the end results of the goals of my clients.

I am the only practitioner in the country who applies hypno-yoga therapy to aid treatment and healing.

My company Path 2 Excellence deals in various programmes in confidence building and public speaking, empowerment and enrichment of adults and the family, emotional coaching, becoming a leader of influence, leading customer service, the psychology of sales and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and mind power control.

As the managing director of Colours In Motion and together with three other psychologists, we offer consultations to housing developers, architects and corporations in areas like the use of colours to promote certain moods and form, branding and image building.

Q: Tell us a bit about Hypno-Yoga?

A: It is the mix of the human physiology used in yoga to anchor certain emotions and to control the mind. There have been results in the area to promote accelerated healing.

Q: What are your future plans?

A: It is my quest to clarify the many negative misconceptions of psychology and for people to see its positive aspects to help and enrich them its application to real life, using the skills and techniques to their advantage and to better the social context which the live in.
