KUALA LUMPUR: If you plan to visit Brickfields soon, consider logging on to the Internet. Similarly, residents of the district can use their computers to conduct their daily activities in regard to their area.
This interesting new option in visiting, experiencing and living in Brickfields has been made possible by the launch of the new web portal www.mybrickfields.com.my.
First mooted as a utility for the Brickfields community, the web portal connects residents with district authorities, organisations and the public.
"Through meetings with key representatives in Brickfields, we discovered that there was a need for a medium of communication for members of the community, hence we created a portal for them," said Malaysian Resources Corporation MRCB group managing director Sharil Ridza Ridzuan.
The website will also be of great interest and use to visitors, tourists and Malaysians, as it will contain numerous interesting sections, including "Brickfields Community", which highlights the district's colourful history, "Events Calendar", which lists happenings in the area, 'Community News', which clues residents and visitors in on developments in the area, "Kopitiam Column", which allows members of the public to post their childhood memories of Brickfields, "Forum", where portal visitors can discuss various issues, and a "Classifieds" advertisements section.
Another aim of the portal is to encourage the use of ICT in the Brickfields community.
"We also hope travellers and tourists will benefit from the information found on the portal, especially on Brickfields' history and places of interest," said Sharil.
The website was launched at YMCA in Brickfields by Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd (KLSSB) chairman Dr Roslan A Ghaffar and witnessed by Sharil and representatives of the community.
"We are glad there's such a portal created for the community. I'm a Brickfields boy and I know everything about this place, even though I'm blind. The community should utilise the portal well and feed informative details," said Moses Choo from the National Council For the Blind.
The portal is user-friendly and the blind are also able to surf it with the aid of their voice-to-text technology.
"In May 2007, author Balan Moses launched Brickfields: A Time, A Place, A Memory, which is a personal account of the transformation of one of Malaysia's oldest quarters.
"In conjunction with the launch, MRCB purchased 1,000 books to declare its support for heritage conservation, helping underprivileged communities and elevating standards of its surrounding communities," said Shahri.
