PETALING JAYA: There were wide smiles on the faces of children and staff of the Spastic Children's Association of Selangor and Federal Territories (SCAS & FT) recently.
A cheque for RM445,315.50 was presented to them. The money will be used to upgrade their living quarters.
The amount was collected in July from the Uptown Charity Carnival 2008 which was sponsored by See Hoy Chan Sdn Bhd and held in Damansara Uptown.
Thanks to the support of Damansara residents, the amount collected was almost double that of last year's collection.
SCAS president Datuk Dr Lam Peng Chong and his friends had pledged to "match ringgit for ringgit" the amount collected at the carnival.
The cheque presentation ceremony was witnessed by Teo Chiang Khai, executive director of See Hoy Chan.
The spastic children's association provides free education, therapy and transportation for 280 special students. It is the only organisation of its kind in the country.
In order to accommodate the increasing number of applicants, as well as to allow SCAS to independently cope with at least 60 per cent of its running costs, the centre needs to refurbish its 40-year-old building at Jalan Utara. Petaling Jaya, which has served as its home since 1966.
SCAS has managed to collect RM6 million, which is only half of the total cost of the project, through charity drive programmes, public donations and corporation aid.
"It's their vision that impressed us. They aim to be self-sufficient. I believe that it should work both ways. Societies supporting non-governmental organisations like this should do something to help themselves," said Teo.
SCAS has been raising funds for the redevelopment, while at the same time, trying to raise funds for its annual operating expenses.
"We hope that caring individuals would also contribute generously towards good causes," said Lam.
