PETALING JAYA: It was a proud moment for SMK Seri Kenangan from Johor when its team beat competitors from 16 schools to be adjudged the champions of the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) national competition.

SMK Seri Kenangan's school project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in its compound impressed the judges enough for the latter to award it the RM10,000 prize.

The school's visual presentation also received rave reviews and earned it another RM2,000.

The exhibition and prize-giving ceremony were held at Sunway Pyramid in Petaling Jaya recently.

First runner-up was the team from SMK Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, who earned RM7,000 for their project "Recovering Recyclables Instead of Disposing at Landfills."

Second runner-up was the team from SMK Klebang Besar from Malacca, who won RM5,000.

Fourth place, which carried a prize of RM3,000, went to SMK Abdul Rahman Talib, Pahang while fifth place and its RM1,000 cash prize went to SMK Raja Puan Muda Tengku Fauziah, Perlis.

The yearly competition, organised by UMW Toyota Motors since 2001, is a joint effort with the Education Ministry to cultivate awareness of and respect for the environment among the students in in secondary schools.

The project kicked off early this year with a workshop. Student participants and their teachers were taught problem-solving and other experimental learning methodologies.
