KUALA LUMPUR: They were all absorbed in twisting and turning in front of a crowd to see who would come out tops.

No, this wasn't a dance competition. It was the annual Rubik's Cube Malaysian Open competition held at the Toys "R" Us store in Subang Jaya.

Chong Theng Yee of the Multi-Media University at Cyberjaya, emerged as the champion with an average score of 25.54 seconds after five rounds, including one 19-second round,

The 18-year-old will compete in the Asian Championship finals in Hong Kong this month.

Gooi Ying Chyi came in second with an average score of 30.18 seconds, followed closely by Goh Choo Hee, third, with an average score of 30.24 seconds.

Two participants who solved the puzzle within the 1-minute-40-second limit to enter the finals were Chee Tai Yuen and Lai Thiam Sin.

"I'm really happy to have won, and I can't wait to go to Hong Kong for the Asian championship.

"I've always enjoyed playing the Rubik's Cube. It really tests your mental aptitude and encourages you to remain focused on getting the six colours coordinated on the right sides," said Chong.

Invented by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian professor of architecture and design, Rubik's Cube has garnered immense popularity since the 1980s, and is one of the best-selling toys worldwide.

There are six sides to a classic Rubik's Cube. Each side consists of nine squares of a particular colour.

The puzzle is solved when each of the six sides displays only one colour.
