Debate on abolishing death sentence

Print Article Email Article

KUALA LUMPUR: To make a clear stand on and to create awareness of the campaign to abolish the death penalty in the country, two events have been planned by Amnesty International Malaysia.

A movie entitled Let Him Have It will be shown on Sept 5 between 12.30pm and 1.45pm at the conference hall of Help University College.

This will be followed by a debate on the topic "Should Malaysia Abolish The Death Penalty" on Sept 12, featuring two teams comprising three members each from ATC College and Help University College .

The team members are from the law faculties of the colleges. The event will be held at ATC, Bangunan Tunas Utama, Petaling Street at 2pm.

Amnesty International Malaysia campaign coordinator K. Shan said: "The debate is held to inform the public on the global moratorium of the death penalty as passed by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec 16, last year."

The debate will be judged by Datuk Denison Jayasooria, who is a member of Amnesty International Malaysia and an advocate and solicitor.

Both events are organised in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
