SEPANG: Malaysia Airlines passengers received a pleasant surprise in the form of packets of dates and bottled water when they disembarked at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Monday.

The "gifts" were Malaysia Airlines' way of taking care of its Muslim passengers who could not break fast while travelling.

Monday was the first day of fasting for Muslims.

The gift packs were handed out to passengers on flights MH1155 from Penang, MH2593 from Miri, MH1281 from Kuantan and MH1058 from Johor Baru.

"Although the first buka puasa meal of Ramadan is always shared with families and friends, there are always Muslims who have to travel on this day and miss that special meal with their loved ones," Malaysia Airlines said in a statement.

By distributing kurma packs to these passengers, Malaysia Airports hopes that the small gesture will help alleviate the feeling of home-sickness and make them feel welcome and at home when they touch down at KLIA.

Malaysia Airports has been practising this tradition of distributing Ramadan tokens for the past three years to welcome travellers and visitors passing through the airport on the first day of the fasting month.

Those touching down at or departing from KLIA can also look forward to other events, among them the Ramadan bazaar and a range of buka puasa offerings provided by dining outlets at KLIA and LCCT-KLIA.

They also stand a chance to be rewarded through the KLIA Magic 10 Shopping Campaign. There are 39 dining outlets and 92 retail outlets that are ready to reward their customers.

The campaign spans a duration of 10 months. It started on Aug 26 and will end in June next year.

The campaign will feature three shopping contests, each with grand prizes and weekly prizes.

In total, RM 2.7 million worth of prizes are up for grabs. Among the prizes are RM 50,000 cash, an RM 30,000 holiday package and a Lexus GS300. Shoppers need to spend a minimum of RM250 at KLIA or LCCT-KLIA.

As official sponsors of the KLIA Shopping Campaign 2008/2009 alongside Lexus, MasterCard Worldwide is also offering additional rewards for MasterCard holders who spend at KLIA and LCCT-KLIA.
