KLANG: Over 900 homes in Klang and Kapar were damaged by strong winds and flood waters during a freak storm on Monday.

Kapar Member of Parliament S. Manikavasagam said the areas worst-hit included Jalan Tepi Sungai, Rantau Panjan and Taman Eng Ang.

"Many homes lost their roofs and over 100 trees were uprooted during the afternoon downpour, which lasted three hours."

Four families had to be evacuated to multi-purpose halls when their homes, in Rantau Pajang, were destroyed.

Manikavasagam, who visited the victims on Tuesday, blamed clogged drains as the cause of the flooding.

"Fortunately the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defense and Red Crescent personnel came to help the hardest hit residents in the areas."

Selat Klang assemblyman Dr Halimah Ali, who also visited the victims, said the state had prepared evacuation centres for them but most preferred to stay close to their homes.

Halimah, who is also a member of the state executive council, said allocations will be made for the victims to rebuild their homes.

She said the Welfare Department, District Office and the Klang Municipal Council will be extending a hand to the victims. The authorities helped the victims register for assistance at Jalan Tepi Sungai.
