IF anything, fashion label Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collection was sewn elegantly to music culture and a gypsy lifestyle.
Long, flowing dresses are reminiscent of the indulgent 1970s while skinny pants paired with printed tops, explore the world of Bohemian glamour.
The prints hold an art-like quality as no two prints or even ornate embroidery, for that matter, are the same. The prints divulge their own graphic statement and are inspired by Eastern European textiles and tapestry.
Richness and opulence are woven through the collection. Ornate embroidery with gold thread, metal discs, gold tassels and small beading touch everything, from the sleeves of silk dresses to waist-lines of cropped shearling jackets.
Glittering metal or jewelled accents cover shoulders and hems while gold studs decorate the surface of bags, heels of boots and waist-line jackets.
Pants are kept skinny and low-waisted while skirts are short and heavily decorated.
Dresses are described as the cornerstone of the collection. Very feminine and sporting dropped waist-lines, they are a head-turner in bold prints and strong fall colours.
The men’s collection tells a slightly different story. Prints fade away and in their place are military-style jackets complete with brass buttons and epaulette.
Truly unconventional, it’s also a collection inspired by rock n’ roll attitude that trickles right down to the long and narrow equestrian boots.
Silhouettes are kept slim. Pants are narrow, low-waisted and, in certain cases, extra long, falling over soft boots. Creative director Frida Giannini presents her offerings in velvet and corduroy suits in rich Prussian blue, bronze and brunt brick.
The coin dangling belts and bags are sure to be a hit, even with the women.
Gucci’s latest designs are available at its store at the Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur.
