The Sofitel Palm Resort has everything you need from restaurants and spa villas to designer golf courses, bowling centre, swimming pool and other sport facilities. Story and pictures by PEGGY LOH

WHEN you step into the lobby of the Sofitel Palm Resort, you will be pleasantly surprised by the view. From the softly trickling fountain to the high wooden beams in the spacious lobby, you immediately feel the warm welcome.

This refreshing oasis of a five-star resort is located right next to Johor Baru and is renowned as a premier integrated leisure and conference destination.

Sofitel Palm Resort has been aptly described as a “one-stop resort”, with 330 luxurious rooms and suites. It is linked to the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club that cradles three 18-hole championship golf courses.

It also has a sports and recreation complex comprising a golf driving range, tennis and squash courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a gymnasium, a health centre, an eight-lane bowling alley, facilities for billiard, table tennis and board games, Kid’s World and the luxurious Balinese Mandara Spa.

With something for everyone, no wonder the resort is popular as a retreat and convention destination. It is not uncommon to find smartly-dressed executives on a management retreat, in contrast with casually-clad tourists and their families.

These groups enjoy the resort’s full residential packages, designed with team-building programmes, water-sports or telematches, corporate golf tournaments, theme events and other creative activities – customised to match any event and budget.

The resort has a wide range of event venues and dining outlets that can be extended or sub-divided, presenting you with options of unmatched versatility and flexibility.

Group banquets, post-meeting drinks and even intimate functions can be hosted with ease, while special menus are created to satisfy the most discerning tastes. A choice of several stylish outlets serving delectable Asian and Western cuisine adds a taste of variety and luxury to any event.

Start your day with a deluxe breakfast at Cocomo and enjoy a range of light snacks, pastries, cakes and sandwiches served all day long. Or you can perk yourself up with refreshing smoothies and healthy fruit drinks.

Bask in the balmy breeze outdoors with a view of the free form swimming pool and kid’s paddle pool, and enjoy the sight of holiday-makers having fun,

For lunch and dinner, the popular Ishwara restaurant serves an excellent combination of local and continental favourites while Sobasei restaurant offers fine Japanese cuisine with avant-garde Japanese art decor. Enjoy an exquisite dining experience at the sushi bar and tatami rooms or teppanyaki grill.

Renowned for its dim sum, Xin-Shan Long also offers Sichuan specialties for connoisseurs of fine Chinese cuisine. For local buffet meals that are value for your money, Las Palmas in the Clubhouse is just the place for a delicious spread of Malay, Indian, Chinese and Peranakan specialties. For an outdoor barbecue, get over to the Sunset Terrace.

The Soleil Sports Bar & Café at the Sports & Recreation Centre serves refreshing cocktails and light snacks while the Golfers Terrace in the Clubhouse is another favourite spot for casual dining. The Spike Bar is a cosy place for drinks and quick snacks or for a rest in between golf rounds.

At sunset, the Bar at the concourse is a favourite rendezvous for Happy Hours and a “live” band entertains nightly. You may also unwind and relax with snacks and cocktails at the Turquoise Bar by the pool.

The resort is also the preferred choice of a wedding venue for a memorable event. Reputed to have the best bridal suites in the city, its affordable five-star luxury wedding packages include great deals for honeymoon and first anniversary celebrations.

“Here at Sofitel we constantly strive to exceed our customers’ expectations,” says its general manager Michael J. Perdikaris.

Adjacent to Sofitel Palm Resort is Palm Resort Golf & Country Club, a premier golf destination with three distinctively individual 18-hole championship courses designed by Hiromasa Inagawa and a spectrum of facilities for sports and recreation. The award-winning Palm Resort Golf & Country Club was voted No. 1 in Johor by Golf Malaysia Magazine in 2001/2002 and No. 2 Best Golf Resort in Asia, 2002 Asian Golf Monthly Awards by Asian Golf Monthly Magazine.

The Melati course is long and testing while the recently-renovated Cempaka course is undulating and the Allamanda course is simply spectacular. Beautifully-landscaped terrain punctuated with elements of challenge in water hazards, massive bunkers, elevation changes and some daunting doglegs will ensure that every club in your bag is put to good use!

The Allamanda Course hosted the Johnnie Walker Super Tour 1998 and the Davidoff Nations Cup (World Cup Qualifiers) in 2002 and 2004.

Palm Resort Golf & Country Club is also home to Asian PGA Academy, one of the most elite teaching programmes in Asia, supported by professionals with impressive credentials and experience in coaching and golf techniques.

After an active day, there’s no better way to rejuvenate than at the Mandara Spa. Select from an a la carte menu of massages, aromatherapy and aquatherapy treatments and holistic packages to heal mind, body and soul.

“All our therapists undergo rigorous training in Mandara’s own training school in Sabah and excel in the Mandara signature massage, an eclectic blend of Balinese, Hawaiian, Thai, Swedish and Japanese Shiatsu massage traditions,” says spa manager Esther Lui.

With luxurious spa villas named Mandara, Frangipani, Tranquility and Harmony, two of which come with double-size bathtubs for floral baths, you can be assured of exquisite pampering.

Mandara was voted Malaysia’s Best Spa by UK-based magazine Travel Weekly in the World Travel Awards 2003 and winner of the Spa Asia 2004 Crystal Award. Call 07-5903698 for reservations.

Whether for work or play, you can conveniently stay “connected” in almost any place within the resort which provides wireless Internet broadband services in all rooms, F&B outlets, library, business centre and other public areas.

The combination of hotel, spa and championship golf courses in a scenic natural location, complemented by a comprehensive range of meeting and recreational facilities, presents the resort as the perfect venue for businessmen, avid golfers, families and groups on retreats.
