Mineral-rich soak

EWE PAIK LEONG

The fee is a mere fraction of a spa treatment. No wonder the hot springs around Kuala Lumpur are attracting the crowds, observes EWE PAIK LEONG

HOT springs have always lured visitors because of their curative properties for muscle aches and minor skin conditions such as rashes. It is believed that the mineral content of the waters such as sulphur, helps in the healing process.

A good soak in a hot spring also rejuvenates you. When you submerge yourself in the warm water, the blood vessels are dilated. The impurities and toxins in the blood are removed through the sweat as circulation is increased. When you get up and are cooled by the surrounding air, the blood vessels constrict and cleaner, purified blood is driven to the internal organs. This process has a stimulating effect on the body’s nervous system. As a result, you feel rejuvenated.

There are two hot springs on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur that can be enjoyed for a nominal fee. Though they are not as famous as those in Sungai Klah and Tambun in Perak or Pedas in Negeri Sembilan, they are tourist destinations in their own right.

Just bring a towel and a change of clothes to enjoy a relaxing time without having to pay the entrance price of a spa.

Selayang Hot Springs

This boasts of three pools that have their source from a nearby stream. The Selayang Hot Springs has been around for about 10 years but was relatively unknown until last year after it was upgraded and a signboard erected at the slip road leading to it. Since then, the hot springs have been attracting visitors on weekends. Hawker stalls do a roaring business selling burgers, fried bihun, satay, kuih and drinks. Most of the visitors are from the surrounding areas.

Of the three pools, the one under the shade of trees is the most popular. Visitors like to sit on the edge of the circling wall to relax. This is also the hottest pool; the other two have lower temperatures. In these two pools, it is possible to dip oneself into the pool, but some people prefer to use a bucket to scoop water from the pool to bathe. After cooling off, the bathing process is repeated a few times.

To get to the Selayang Hot Springs, travel along Jalan Ipoh towards Rawang. After passing the Selayang Wholesale Market on the right and upon approaching the Kia Service Centre, keep a lookout for the signboard on the left just before the flyover leading to Bandar Baru Selayang. There is no entrance fee but visitors are charged RM1 for parking. The use of the toilet is 30 sen.

Setapak Hot Springs

Closer to the city lies the Setapak Hot Springs. If you are coming from the city centre, travel along Jalan Genting Kelang and turn right to Jalan Air Panas. The hot spring is located within the compound of the Resource Spring Apartment.

Spewing from a subterranean stream, the warm mineral-rich water from the hot springs is contained in a wavy pool hidden amidst coconut palms. The physical setting of this hot spring is very inviting, and there are toilet facilities.

According to a resident of the apartments, the spot is always a bustle of activity in the early morning when elderly folks take a refreshing dip in the pool. After soaking for about half an hour or so, they change and go for breakfast at the hawker stall at the entrance of the apartment.

Entrance fee is only RM1 for adult and 50 sen for child. Just pay at the security guard house. Opening hours are from 7am to 7pm. Parking is available on the road shoulder outside the apartment.

Given the stress of modern living in KL, a good soak in the soothing warm waters of a hot spring is just the thing to help you unwind and to uplift your spirits. Try it!
