Take a drive along the gently sculpted Bukit Bintang hill looming high above verdant flat land and you will come across the scenic vineyard in Sungai Batu Pahat near Kangar. The Bukit Bintang vineyard is one of the few in the State that produces grapes on a commercial basis. Perlis produces several types of grapes, including New White Malaga, Green Perlette and Black Opal which can be harvested within a year, so we can soon expect grape products like juice, cordial and raisins. There are plans to turn about 1,000 hectares of idle land in the State into vineyards. Perlis is already noted for its sugarcane plantations, padi fields and cash crops like bananas and the famous harum manis mangoes. While all these mean revenue from the agriculture sector, the plantations themselves are also a big tourism draw. The greenery is a balm for the eyes, making a stay in the State a truly relaxing one.
