It is Malaysia’s oldest national park and is now 50 years old. Time and natural forces of waves and wind have sculptured bewildering rock formations such as sea stacks and arches as well as caves. The park has almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo. Covering 2,727 hectares at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula, Bako has seven complete eco-systems. You will find beach vegetation, cliff vegetation, kerangas of heath forest, mangrove forest, mixed dipterocarp forest, padang or grasslands and peat swamp forest. You can notice the contrasts of the different vegetation as you trek the different jungle trails in the park. The sights at Bako are like “Nature’s Art Exhibition”. There is always the concern that over time, the natural heritage will diminish due to inherent forces and development. Art lovers and Nature lovers out there will find these pictures of Bako truly inspirational. How To Get There Petra Jaya Bus No. 6 from Kuching takes 40 minutes to arrive at Kampung Bako. The earliest bus leaves Kuching at 6am and the last bus leaves Kampung Bako at 5pm daily. Visitors must report at the arrival terminal near the jetty. Chartered boats manned by the locals cost RM16 for a return journey from Kampung Bako to the park. Children pay half price and toddlers under 12 months are charged only 10 per cent of the fare.
