Consumer needs at heart of Lenovo designs

Q: Tell us about your role at Lenovo.
A: My task is to tell people about Lenovo products and how we are different. I also meet with customers, businesses and the media to help them understand more about Lenovo products.
Recently, I started to blog, a corporate blog. It is a channel for us to converse with customers and share about things that go on behind the scene, or things that we are struggling with. We also added a forum to the blog for consumers to give us feedback.

Q: What sets Lenovo products apart from competitors’?
A: Our products have always been about great designs, with focus on how users want to use them. We always ask our consumers, “What do you want to see different in the products?” From their feedback, we found out that they want their computing system to be more reliable.
Our products also allow users to focus on what they want to do. In a way, we want to make the PC “disappear” so they can concentrate on getting their tasks done.

Q: How do Lenovo pinpoint what customers want in their PC?
A: No consumer is exactly the same, so what we’ve done is expand our offerings. There is no one-size-fits-all notebook computer, but over the years we have learnt what their common needs are.
On the consumer side, there are universal features that they want: they want to connect, so we have put in features like Webcam and Wi-Fi. We believe the answer is a wide variety of products and help in choosing the features that will suit the user.

Q: What’s next when it comes to the notebook computer?
A: We are going to see PCs that will fold up and roll into our pockets. There will also be added battery life.
We are also looking at putting solar panels on our notebooks so they can even be charged when idle. A lot of technology like display and processor will go through refinement over the years.

Q: How does Lenovo support the “green IT” initiative?
A: Lenovo notebooks have power management software where you can set a profile and punch it to all the users within your organisation.
In other words, you can enforce power savings and make positive impact on your business. Our products are also Energy Star and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive)-compliant.
Apart from that, we do bulk packing where we put multiple PCs into one box. This is also easier to pack, load and unpack.

Q: Where do you see Lenovo in five years’ time?
A: I see our product portfolio growing. We have just extended our product line with the latest netbooks and workstations. We hope to grow our business in existing and emerging markets and continue to give consumers what they want.
