Building simplicity-led innovations

WHAT may seem impossible today can be made possible in the near future, all thanks to the rapid developments in technology.
At a recent trip to London, under the invitation of Dutch electronics outfit Philips, selected journalists from the world over got a glimpse of the company’s offerings through its brand promise of “sense and simplicity” at the Simplicity Event 2007. Here, the company shared on its recent successes as well as its vision for the future through its
simplicity-led design concepts.
At the event, the focus was on “Care” – Care for Family, Care for Patients and Care for Guests. Those three main concepts were showcased to the journalists, including yours truly, and all watched in awe the solutions that were designed to foster our overall well-being. I will elaborate on these concepts in next week’s publication, accompanied with pictures, to help readers “see” the applications at work.
With the emphasis on simplicity and innovation, the company’s focus is on creating meaningful innovations based on human-centred design to help change and improve people’s lives.
In addition to those concepts, the company showcased its One Star is Born project that promises guests “affordable luxury”. To be opened at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam early next year, hotel chain citizen will provide guests with a factory-built, pre-fabricated hotel room that can be delivered on-site, becoming instantly operational with the connection of just four cables.
Not only is that an innovation for guests to enjoy, but also a solution for hotel owners that can deliver cost savings of up to 50 per cent due to a remote maintenance system.
Nevertheless, the concept is so radical that it can change the way the hospitality industry cares for its guests. And hotels that have full bookings during peak seasons can literally increase their rooms with this “can be delivered to you” hotel room. Imagine resort-style hotels that have sprawling grounds, and space constraint is unheard of.
