Gadget wish list for new year
Aimie Pardas
I haven’t thought of any new year’s resolution this year, but I have been thinking of a few things that I want to put on my wish list for the year.
Top on my list is a new smartphone. My current phone is being used beyond voice calls and text messaging. It is now a tool for Web browsing, e-mailing, updating photos on Web sites, music and also a tool to fill up those spots of free time that I have.
Of course, I’d like a phone with a built-in camera, at least third-generation (3G) connectivity, Bluetooth and music functions – the usual multimedia features commonly found in today’s mobile phones. But the one feature that I must insist on in my next smartphone is built-in Wi-Fi.
Sure 3G or High Speed Downlink Packet Access is great and fast for Web browsing on the phone, but those packets of data cost money, and 3G connectivity isn’t always available where I am. If I’m using my phone for Web browsing and there’s an available hotspot, I would rather use the hotspot than my 3G connection.
While I do sometimes use my phone in lieu of a computer, I haven’t completely sent my computer for recycling either. There are still some things that a full-fledged browser does better – watching videos, for example.
Additionally, not all Web sites are rendered properly on the phone’s Web browser. It certainly doesn’t offer the same experience as a regular computer.
This brings me to the second item on my wish list – a new portable computer, specifically the Asus Eee PC. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the Eee PC at the last PC Fair, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available at the Asus booth.
Much has been said about the Eee PC – news reports say it has outperformed sales expectations.
The Eee PC may not be as powerful as current laptop computers, nor have as high specifications as one. But for me, the most appealing aspect of this machine is its size, weight and price.
The Eee PC should be easy to carry around, as it is seven inches in size and weighs less than one kilogram.
And what’s also important is that it doesn’t look like a toy.
For me, it would be a great secondary computer used mainly for Web browsing and e-mailing and maybe even the occasional office productivity tool.
But the good old desktop PC still won’t be sent in for recycling, as I still need a computer for those power-hungry applications such as photo and video editing and gaming.
So, there’s no list of new year’s resolutions this year, but a gadget wish list that’s sure to grow as the year goes by!
