SPORTS Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic) said the national shuttlers must treat the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals like a war and not expect extra incentives from the government if they attain success in Jakarta.

"I'm representing the public and we want the shuttlers to win both titles. Winning will be a perfect gift for the people of Malaysia," said Ismail after giving a pep talk to the national shuttlers at the National Sports Council (NSC) in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.

"It has been 16 years since we lifted the Thomas Cup and lets end the drought in the Indonesian capital."

Ismail said the target of winning, especially the Thomas Cup, is realistic as most of the national shuttlers are world class.

Ismail also had a chat with former World No 1 pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who assured him they have settled their differences.

Spotlight: Gentlemen in the House?

While live telecasts of first world parliaments can make a person weep because of the rich depth and maturity of argument, as well as the seriousness with which parliamentarians take their duties, in developing Malaysia, it is also possible to weep — from laughter and shame. In the British parliament, MPs may refer to each other as "The Honourable Member", but in the Dewan Rakyat, MPs are more fondly referred to as "Bigfoot" and "Big Monkey". Should Question Time be telecast live? Does the public need to be protected from seeing their elected representatives in all their naked glory? Should the MPs be protected from their own stupidity?, asks ANIZA DAMIS.

It is the most widely used contraceptive in the country, and yet no one is supposed to talk about it. With the emergence of 6,000 new HIV cases each year, Malaysians can't afford to be silent about condoms anymore, writes CHAI MEI LING.
