The Elders of the Royal Court of Selangor issues statement on Karpal Singh's comments in a local daily

Elders of The Council of The Royal Court of Selangor view the recent statement purportedly made by Y.B. Karpal Singh as reported in The Malay Mail of 6 May 2008 as very misleading.

The statement was quoted as implying that His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor is interfering in executive matters of the state.

Such a baseless, unfounded and irresponsible statement has indeed brought much concern and uneasiness to this Council.

The Council believes that this statement was somewhat made to create a misconception in the minds of the rakyat as to the role of His Royal Highness as the Sultan of Selangor, who is merely exercising His rights as enshrined in the State Constitution.

It is within our knowledge that the Sultan of Selangor in His weekly meeting with the Menteri Besar of Selangor has always given His views and advice on matters of importance to the people of Selangor.

At the same time the Sultan has always maintained His neutral stance and has always upheld His detachment of any political preference or of interference with executive matters.

His one and only concern is the well being of the rakyat and the interests of the State so that the people of Selangor will continue to enjoy peace, harmony and prosperity.

Further we are of the view that there is no legal constraint for the Sultan to express His opinions concerning any matter within the parameters of His domain, namely the State’s affairs.

Indeed, it is the Sultan’s right to express His opinions on government policy. We stress that it is perfectly within the constitutional parameters for the Sultan to express His views or make His opinion known concerning any matter what soever pertaining to His subjects, as a Sultan.

As a constitutional monarch, the Sultan has the right to be consulted, the right to advice, and the right to warn. We would like to emphasis that the Sultan is politically impartial.
