SINGAPORE: Some 40 experts on illegal football gambling from six countries, including Malaysia, met at a workshop recently to share strategies and best practices to combat the problem. Organisers of the workshop, the Singapore Police Force (SPF), were joined by enforcement officers from Malaysia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The workshop, which discussed the illegal football bookmaking situation in Asia, was the second operational meeting and training workshop on football gambling for the countries.

The first workshop was held in Dongguan, China, last year.

SPF Criminal Investigation Department director Assistant Commissioner Ng Boon Gay said the workshop was a good avenue for the participants to pick up the best practices in dealing with such threats.

He said the modus operandi of illegal bookmaking operations had become increasingly sophisticated. -- Bernama
