Muhyiddin: I did not say I would contest

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has denied a report that he would be contesting one of the two top posts in the party.

"I have never said that I would contest," he said at the 62nd Umno anniversary celebrations yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who tried to avoid meeting the press, was chased by a big group of reporters and finally agreed to give a brief comment.

He said the decision whether or not he would be contesting for a top post rested with the delegates.

"It is not up to me. The delegates have to decide on it."
Muhyiddin, who is also the Minister of International Trade and Industries, said this in response to a newspaper report that he would consider contesting should he get enough support from the grassroots.

He reportedly said that he had received a lot of feedback from various quarters who wanted him to move up the party hierarchy.

The Pagoh Umno division chief said it was too early to decide if he would be contesting in the coming party election.

"It is not time yet. It is too early. Let the delegates decide."
