SINGAPORE:

A 20-year-old Malaysian was sentenced to death by a Singapore court for a drug trafficking offence, the local media reported today

Yong Vui Kong, an odd-job labourer, was found guilty yesterday of trafficking in 47gm of heroin on June 13 last year.

The court heard that Yong was asked by his boss in Johor Baharu to deliver the drug, wrapped as gift packages, to people in Singapore and he would be paid $2,000 for running the errand.

On his trip on June 12, Yong, accompanied by a friend, drove to Singapore at about 10pm and went to Yishun where he passed about 14gm of heroin to Lim Foo Seng, 51, and received $5,000 in return.

All the while Yong and his friend were not aware that they were being trailed by Central Narcotics Bureau officers.
Yong was only arrested after midnight after he made another delivery to Reggie Gwee Chin Hian, 22, who testified that he had received drugs from Yong on five to six occasions between May and June last year.

Both Gwee and Lim have been jailed for 22 years each for trafficking in drugs.

Yong’s friend was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal as there was no evidence that he knew of the drug.
