GEORGE TOWN: Police yesterday recorded a statement from DAP chairman Karpal Singh for allegedly questioning the powers of the Sultan of Perak.

Karpal said two officers from the Northeast police headquarters spent two hours recording his statement at his law firm in Greenhall.

"They queried me on my alleged questioning of the powers of the Sultan of Perak. It was a cordial meeting."

The police officers were Assistant Superintendents A. Sidambaram and ASP Azly Akmar. Karpal said the police questioned him over his statement that Sultan Azlan Shah had no jurisdiction over the transfer of Datuk Jamry Sury from the Perak Islamic Religious Department.

The report was lodged by businessman Zainor Fadzi Paharudin in Ipoh on May 5.
Zainor urged the police to take action against Karpal as his statement had caused uneasiness among the people.

The police also questioned Karpal on a report lodged by another businessman, Suharto Mat Nasir, in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, on April 25, about Karpal's comments about a speech by the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan.

They recorded an explanation from Karpal on his statement that the monarchy must stay apolitical.

In his speech, the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan said that special Malay privileges should not be disputed. Karpal was reported to have said that the speech was an affront to the other races in the country.

Karpal had also said it was not right for the Tengku Mahkota to descend to the political arena and make statements which verged on sedition.
