KUALA LUMPUR: Jeweller and writer Syed Akbar Ali will have to face a sedition charge after the court dismissed his preliminary objection yesterday.
Sessions Court judge Roza-na Ali Yusoff said she found no defects in the charge against him.
Syed Akbar's counsel, Ashok Kandiah, had earlier submitted that the charge did not make reference to any of the six seditious tendencies stated under the Sedition Act 1948.
Deputy public prosecutor Ishak Yusof said the prosecution did not have to state under which of the six seditious tendencies the statement fell.
"At the end of the day, it is the court's duty to decide what amounts to sedition.
"The particulars in the charge, the offence, time, date and place, are sufficient for the accused to give directions to his lawyers for his trial."
Syed Akbar had claimed trial to posting seditious remarks in a comment section of an article entitled "03/06: Malaysia's Organised Crime Syndicate: all roads lead to Putrajaya" by blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin on the Malaysia Today website.
Rozana fixed tomorrow for mention to set trial dates.
