Campaign to boycott US goods

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association, along with Muslim restaurateurs and several Muslim non-governmental organisations, will be launching a campaign to boycott American products tomorrow.
The national campaign to boycott selected Jewish and American goods is being launched as a protest against the United States' policies on anti-terrorism and Israel's attacks on Palestine. MMCA secretary general Datuk Dr Ma'amor Osman urged Malaysians, including non-Muslims, to support the campaign. He also urged the government to stop using US currency and the people to boycott Hollywood movies and American music. He said consumers should turn to local brands instead.

ailaaa: Yes, we depend on USA products. Isn't this supposed to be a wake-up call? We should stop this dependency and why not now, when there's a reason to. Necessity is the mother of invention. The boycott on coca cola in some arab countries results in own production of soft drinks.
And with much respect to the guy who said that 'why boycott usa when it's israel that's doing the attack', i hope you make yourself more well-informed. The zionist and usa are like...isi dan kuku maybe?
We need to really understand something before we support it, and MUCH so before we go against it.
Neutral, UK: This move is just offering an avenue for those who feel strongly about the crisis. Since not everybody can go to the battle for the Palestinians, the boycott is symbolically a form of moral support by those who feels strongly about this issue.
If one can afford to boycott the products, then do so. If one disagrees, then don't.
Ant: I seriously agree with the campaign.
1. If we can't boycott all product/service, then boycott some of them.(1,000 mile journey begin with STEP 1).
2. If we have 'humanities' sense, then whatever happen to Palestine people, will affect us no matter it is political or economic.(Imagine your brother/sister living in Palestine)
3. We always look for the objective(effectiveness), but in reality, there might be complicated and we don't know what will happen next!.(To understand, imagine why there is insurance company?). So, keep doing but leave the result to Allah.
Ravi, Johor Bahru: Just because you want to do something does not mean you can do anything?! The whole boycott as many pointed out here would be useless and in the end will hurt us more. They are not going to lose anything much compared to us. And about the Hollywood movies and American music ... pur-lease ... they aren't any local brands comparable. I do not see Hollywood movies encouraging the acts of terror. While these boycotting people are misguided into labeling the general American population into blood-thirsty hounds, we are not to forget that America did not launch any boycotts in response to 9/11 or the the other terror threats which were Middle Eastern in origin. And about oil or any commodities, think with your head and your feet grounded. Plus I do not think any major oil producing nation is going to care about a tuppence. With the global credit crunch, to launch anything economically motivated is dumb and no one is that brainless to follow suit.
Alibaba: That fella who suggest this idea might have thought that Malaysia market is huge for US products.
Grace: Oh dear, what will happen if the whole of USA boycotts OUR products? Our microchips, our textile products, etc and our students there... Think!
Zaxis, Kuala Lumpur: What they really should put is "Lets Boycott Certain American/Israel Products" because thats the only thing we can do. Can't boycott all coz i'ts practically impossible. But if we only boycott certain stuff, doesn't it defeats the purpose of boycott itself? Yes, I despise Izrael for Gaza & America for 'blessing' Israel. For that matter, what can I do? Torn between heart and logic... Oh heck, since God gave me a heart to use it for not just living it, I think I'll continue to boycott...but only certain stuff...hehe.
no country: Please go Back with Coconut as your Bowl.. You People are no Brain.. Malaysia is Back to Stone age
Neutral, UK: C'mon guys,
This is just one way of acting towards the crisis.
It's a free world. If you can afford to boycott, then do so. But
if you disagree, then don't do it.
Enjoy your McDonalds and Starbucks.
But there is no neccessity for condemnation and harsh language here.
John: For those who want the list of US products, the first in the list is the processor of your computer. So, dismantle your PC and remove the processor. Or, you might just as well throw away the whole thing because without the processor, it is just a piece of junk.
cw: If company like intel, citibank or mcdonald cease operation in MALAYSIA,how many people going to be jobless?really stupid!!!Please use your BRAIN to think before doing anything!!
Ema Zull: There are many ways to solve these, short term & long term. Many opposed to boycotting, thinking that it is a long term action. Boycotting if done seriously, worldwide can cause a temporary shock to the dreading US econs. A temporary shock to an economy can hit the country.
Everybody knows that it is not realistic to boycott every US products (thanks to globalization!). However, it is one of many ways to help.
Do every effort of helping Palestinian simultaneously. Short-term acts can be boycotting US F&B, donation, petition but no stupid riots. For the long term act, educate everybody the history of the conflicts, the importance of peace, develop our own technology to reduce the dependence to foreigners, urge our children to the value of 'kenegaraan', moral, increase trade among Asian countries, study hard so that you can takeover the OIC chairs.
One thing for sure it is ashamed to look down at other people's effort to help eventhough it is a short term one.
Keng Tiong Hai, Kota Kemuning: Boycott US product won't work in this time of globalisation. What is actually US product are not made in US but in other countries.
Malaysia too produce many product for US companies. How about prayiong for peace instead.
cleo, alorstar: I don't really mind if non-muslims are not going to boycott the U.S and Jews products. But for those are being a MUSLIMS...this is something we have to take it seriously because we cannot really boycott through our country. Yeah..as we can see.. We can only boycott as an individual or the community of the muslims. DON'T REACT AS A MALAYSIAN, BUT YOU, YOURSELF AS A MUSLIMS. IT REALLY HELPS ALTHOUGH ITS ONLY GOING TO REDUCE U.S$ 0.0000000000000000000000....1!!
jack, Malacca: I am agreeable to boycott of using USD and US Products, Have to be practical though, start with simple things such boycott Coca-cola (not good for health anyway), McD, tobacco prod, etc. Just dont give excuses, its the least we can do to get our message to Israel and their key backer.
Mark, Hamburg (Germany): What is the point of mixing world trade with religion? Malaysia was once a country of multi-religious people living together peacefully. Why trying to heat up a situation that is far more than U.S. products and Israel fighting Gaza? This just an attempt to instrumentalize free people. It seems there are people in Malaysia (and maybe also in the U.S.) that do not want a co-existence of people believing in what they want. Does worshipping one or the other make one person better than another? Let us all learn our lesson from the past. Trying to convince someone with hate and violence has never been a long-lasting solution. And boycotting products is the first step in the wrong direction. Btw, what is Malaysias role in the conflict? Malaysia heavily relies on exports. Think of it and do not believe in people that misuse power to secure their own power instead of the people's wellbeing. Be it in the U.S., Malaysia or elsewhere in the world.
bon, Kuala Lumpur: To boycott US products is kinda impossible. We are too dependant on US to survive. Besides, what can we do if only we(malaysians) alone are carrying out the boycott campaign? Do we have the power to influence other asia coutries to join our campaign? If we do, then this campiagn might just work as desired. As for myself, campaign should be carried out but we must gather the forces of asia coutries (that is dependant on govvernment). What citizens like us can do?
DONATE TO AUTHORIZED FUN RAISER AND PRAY TO GOD THAT THE WAR WOULD END ASAP!!!
Munchurian: Boycott > US company loose profit > US Company size down Malaysian business > Malaysians loose jobs. War goes on.
Sounds like a great plan to shoot ourselves in the foot.
Faidhur, Shah Alam: Right. Those of you who say something to the effect of our economy being dependent on the US have got to be kidding. The American economy is in shambles, the US Dollar is not backed by any commodity, and is in fact consisting of worthless pieces of paper. Boycotting American products especially at this time would be the wake up call they need.
Even if they ban all imports from us, who the heck cares!? Besides the abovementioned reasons (ie they pay with paper) there are also other, much bigger and better nations we can do business with, for example China. While choice was limited before, the origin of goods tend to be much more diverse now. Choices exist. Exercise them.
And after doing all this and you find that there are still American products you cant avoid, for example computers and airplanes, fine. Tamper your idealism with some realism and create some pragmatism. Boycott what you can. At least some of their products and economy will suffer, if not all.
Where there is a will there is always a way. You might not be able to boycott all American products, but some we can certainly do without. Doesn't mean we are "UNDER US" like some dim witted people here tend to think.
DumbNDumber: Why you guys all so worked out? Datuk Mama watever said _SELECTED_ US and Israelis products which does not include Intel, AMD, Microsoft, Coca-cola, KFC, CITYBank, AIA, Motorola,...
See we r still ok la.... now go back to your web surfing..
fadzli, jhr: I would give support instead of doing nothing to help. This is a way to contribute, if anyone out there smarter than please help Palestine, share with us and not be cruel by stopping any effort toward humanitarian. Start with yourself, do something. Some of you may not carefully read it out,"boycott selected Jewish and American goods", "consumers should turn to local brands instead".
john, Australia: Make it also US/EURO/SA/Canada etc etc as the backbone of economies in westernised countries have been established by the the Jews over centuries. not to mention since WW2. Ban the lot then???
Nur_Hijrah, KL: The campaign is boycotting on the selective product e.g. COKE, STARBUCKS AND COLGATE.
please visit http://www.muslimconsumer.org.my/ppim/news.php
for further info
please be informed and please followup with the news crossly before making any comment.
From the comment can notice most of the Malaysian is a negative thinker? i hope this is not representable.
Nina: Ask Fatah....what are their reaction to this current conflict? IMHO, an eye for an eye is the total solution to this serious conflict. Period.
Anak Malaysia, Terenganu: Yea Come lets doing this!
Damien, Sydney Australia: Hahaha... Yeah u guys are so smart. Then instead of McDonalds, u can eat at MatDins, instead of Coke, u can drink Tongkat Ali, instead of driving Fords and Chevrolets u can drive Protons, instead of watching Batman, u can watch KeluangMan, instead of using Facebook, u can use BukuMuka. Man when will u guys bloody learn?
Alvin KK: Don't forget Medication from US. Any terminally ill patients should also stop using medication from the US.
Duan, Kuala Lumpur: All Malaysian must support the cause whichever possible. If all Muslim Malaysia just do their tiny efforts, the impact will be tremendous. Don't expect others to help, except we help ourselves. The Dutch Products and other non halal products circulating via emails prove it.
dino, bangi: Hello buddies don't tell others stupid or childish before you check yourself. Be open-minded and not judgmental. What the muslim consumer association try to do is to ask us volutarily, not mandatory. Of course we cannot boycott all the US products. we still need to use the computer (intel, amd) and so on. But we can do our part (if you against or nor allied with the Killers) to boycott on the certain or selective products (u can figure out), thats all. no big deal.So come on particularly to my fellow muslim,if we are not play our role and help on this campaign, who else???
Arianna Hanis: do u know that the US is the largest foreign investors in msia as well as largest trading partner? now the economy is very bad, don't do such stupid things.
bf, Klang: Congrats to MMCA, that is the only thing we little people can do. A small boycott RM100.00 here and there if multiplied by thousands can be a good signal. We may not be able to boycott everything (like Intel , Microsoft etc.) but do boycott what we can afford to like McD or Coke.
Although ISRAEL said they are only looking for HAMAS fighters, based on the pictures of dying children do you think they actually care? So why should I care if McD here are affected. To the govt, please speed up the steps to reduce our dependency to US and foster better economic relationship with OIC countries plus others like BRIC (Brazil, Rusia, India and China). I think we are heading towards that anyway with more economic activities seen from Pak Lah's visit to Islamic Countries.
poobalan: Imagine boycotting mcdonalds or starbucks which are businesses own by malaysians and employing malaysians! so these people are expected to let go of their franchise license? There are thousands of products with US "branding" but in fact is produced in diverse worldwide locations. processor chips may be Intel, but the rest of PC/laptop is made in China, Taiwan, Thailand etc. So, how are we going to boycott? What are things that is 100% made in US? I can think of the potatoes and imported biscuits sold in hypermarkets :-)
This problem is related to the Arab nations. Let them sort it out. They can pressure any country with their "black gold". Looks like they are not bothered, but here we are jumping up and down like nobody's business.
jena, kedah: I TOTALLY SUPPORT THIS MOVEMENT, BETTER WE DO SOMETHING THAN DO NOTHING. IN SOME EXTENT, WE HAVE AN OPTION. WE NOT DIE IF WE NOT USE AMERICAN PRODUCTS. DON'T FEAR WITH AMERICA LAH.WE ARE SO DI JAJAH MINDA BY AMERICA.
Hamilton Bacon: The global economic recovery depends on US economic recovery. Ask any expert if this is not so. If you boycott US goods and services, you are just prolonging the global economic crisis and even compounding the problem. Who is the loser in the end?
weng, kuala lumpur: try boycotting the cigarette giants like Dunhill, Marlboro, Salem. can we not sell these cigarettes? well, ask the smokers. smoke gudang garam lol...:-)
Azri, Kuala Lumpur: I am for the boycott, for those against it, keep your opinions to yourselves, it's just plain selfishness
e-pain,Penang: for me gov should send some army n medic ppl to go help over there..much more affective.rather than done things from here..such as boikot which i think hard to do n honestly we can do as we r stuck with a lot of us product...
Rosman: yes, i support this campaign !
Puny Brain: Please ban, boycott, and if you can launch missiles aimed to reach US. Please, we also have to fight like this. We are barbarians.
Kevin: Okay. those who support this campaign can STOP using computers. Apparently INTEL and AMD are American companies unless you find a way to produce your own processor. So, DO NOT REPLY HERE/USE COMPUTER if you INTEND TO BOYCOTT US PRODUCTS.
Katsumi: Boycott USA product & services.Think 1st. Some may rethink if some product that required he or she to use or need it so badly in term personal usage or business purposes. Ok. I give you the list of USA product & service list.
Coca-cola, KFC, CITYBank, AIA, micorsoft, motorola, McD, logiteck, nintendo, xbos, hoenywell, monsantoh, dow agko & many more. Please feel free to add more companies from USA.
Jane: If u want to help, do donations etc. By blaiming this all on US will be useless, isn't it Israel who is attacking Palestine? why blame US fully?? also by boycotting, semiconductors etc are all from US, do u want us to go backwards?? Do something productive and not childish just based on anger.
Belly: This is a political issue. shouldnt it be raised up politically? Why do we sacrifice our economy for politics?
Posh, PJ: I totally agree with Mohamadon, Shah Alam.
lynnzz: can we just focus on cleaning up our own backyards first before we start making noise about boycotting other country products & crippling our own nation in the process?
that mmca sec-gen is so childish. his call to boycott american products sounds so like a kindergarten playground "i don't want to friend you anymore!"
grow up, will you? sheesh!
Syam: This campaign won't be effective.
Nor does it do good to Malaysians.
Let's, instead, turn the campaign into 'buy Malaysian products only'. Not only it serves similar purpose,it also helps our economy.
Of course there are always local products antagonism.
But at least, we don't 'pinch the alligator's tail'
or we add fuel to the fire.
Malaysians must be tactful
in dealing with such a crisis
Gallivanter, KL: Boycotting is not gonna solve anything. Instead of focusing on what's happening OUTSIDE our country, we should focus our efforts on improving Malaysia.
kewlbebeh,NS: Why care about effective or not??? No matter how small your effort, i.e. boycotting etc. all will be counted for. At the judgement day God will ask us, what you have done to help the poor palestinians? C'mon.. you people don't even try it and keep saying it is stupid and childish. Some more even say we ARE UNDER U.S.! So sad...
Boycotting is the least we can do.
AndrewS: Although I am not muslim but I do not agree at all on Israel action on Palestine people. But people who call for boycotting US goods is just stupid no brain at all. First of all, can we effort to stop using Boeing Airplane, Microsoft product, and Intel chip. Can our country function? Will this so call boycotting US product will able to impact USA in a big way. No way man just dreaming only.
Developed Mentality: Historically we have nothing to do with whats hapenning at Gaza. One third of M'sia's income depend on US. Be realistic, let the ARABs sort it out themselves. No muslims here make noise when there is war in Sri Lanka and various other parts of the world. Lets sort out our own country problems first that is bloody corruption.
Matthews,KL: Be grateful to be a malaysian guys.We live in peace and harmony.Don't start to fire up,try to think the other way.To boycott US goods is one way but we can do something else about it,like giving donation? What we need here is our Muslim brothers in OIC to unite and solve this matters.soon.
fecto, subang jaya: instead of boycotting, there's another way to make the American and Israeli govt to pay for what their did.
we should not do businnes in USD.yes, avoid using USD currency when dealing or doing businees either with locals or foreigners.instead use other currency or better use Ringgit Malaysia inexchange of USD.
to boycott the goods from US and Israel aint really effective as this will effect the employers in American company in Malaysia.
CSOH: Yes! Let's us all stop using american products. For example, computers with microsoft logo and aircrafts components made from US. Childish!!!!!!! U want to save palestinians? Tell muslim OIC members to stop exporting oil to US la, stupid. Very easy if they co-operate, but i don't think will do this cuz money come first for them, human lives? Uh, let bank a/c fill up first.
MEGNA: STOP SAYING USELESS MATTER THAT WE NOT ABLE TO DREAM TO DO THIS.. JUST REMEMBER WE DEALING MOST OF THE THING WITH THEM.. IF THEY BOYCOTT OUR PRODUCTS THEN MALAYSIA WILL BE HELPLESS!
rina,KL: IF YOU ALL BOYCOTT US FOOD AND CURRENCY THEN MALAYSIA WILL BE HELPLESS... WE ARE UNDER US. WE DEALING WITH LOT OF THINGS WITH THEM.. JUST THINK CAN DO IT IF YOU ALL CARE ABOUT MALAYSIAN PEOPLE...
Afiq, US: Muslim country should unite and use the OPEC to cut down on oil export thus raising the price in US. A new financial center could be establish in Dubai to keep the oil prices low for other nation. This center should push for trade between Islamic nation with gold dinar equivalent to make us less dependent on their dollar.
With enough support, the days of America economic domination and confidence in dollar would be numbered. They should learn how to be nice then.
hansolo,KL: We can boycott whatever we can. And Americans don't have the money to buy our goods anyway. Their economy is in trouble right now. Their hollywood movies have been trash these many years after being taken over by American Zionist Interests.
7250, Kuala Lumpur: I fully support this campaign. However, will it make a lot difference/ or stop this irresponsibile act? There should be more effective way to teach these idiots bcoz currently other big nation are cowards. Scrap PBB!!
JAne: What a chidlish and foolish act!! Do you know tht there's many US companies located here??? thousands of jobs for MALAYSIANS. Foolish and ungrateful.
Missy,KL: We had done it before against the Dutch's products, and their sales went down like hell eg : Phillips & Dutch Lady-Nestle. So C'mon ppl, start boycotting these US & Israelist products.
sentakbulan: Yes, stop and think! d isrealis understands only strength, not useless boycotts. i have seen these cycle of isreali massacre and worldwide condemnation the last 40-years. if u care, act. will syede, khalid sfuku and arif volunteer for this million strong force to defend the Gazaans?
mahfuz: I think mahamadon from shah alam doing very good comments...
Shazreen, Sabah: Yes, I want the same thing with Khalid.
I'm just a high school graduate, my contributions toward the victims in Palestine is relatively small and with this campaign, I could at least boycott American products and spend my money on local products.
Send the American products list to my email, alright..
Have a nice day.. And may Allah help the Palestinians.
Mustard: I feel compelled to write and request for a debate on how our local products can be better than imported products.
Syede, KL: Do boycott as much as we can, its hard but at least we do something. For people who are against this, please suggest something constructive instead of being pessimistic & negative. After all the killing of innocent people..MUST END.
khalid sg petani: please let us do our bit, email the list to me
TQ
sfuku: If possible please list out the item produce by US and Israel's
sentakbulan: This campaign like all the others like protesting against the US etc all seems so ludicrous. wat r u going to boycott? Microsoft? Nike? McDonalds? These people are talking through their rears.
If wan to be effective, they should go for the real pers. Send a million muslim volunteers to help defend d rights of the Gazaans!
Stop all der stupid empty useless talk, no action!
zurina: Very Good! U will get fully support from me.At least Malaysian do something in this Palestine issue.
mona: Easier said than done!!
ssj, KL: Yes, go ahead. And US will retaliate by banning imports of all goods manufactured in Malaysia.
Who win who lose?
Mohamadon, Shah Alam: It is well and good to boycott but will it be effective? We want to boycott all American goods and services, our country will be in chaos i.e. our computers, our aircrafts (Boeings and RMAF), and many other services. Try boycotting McDonalds and flying on any MAS Boeing aircraft!!! Possible? Too much rhetorics is not going to do any good. Let us get real and pragmatic.
WE must ask our Muslim brothers in Hamas and Fatah to unite first. We must ask our Muslim brethrens and countries in the OIC to unite which they do not seem to. Let us clean up our backyard first.
Zero, Port Klang: This is a waste of time and will not achieve anything. Don't forget we have more to lose if the Americans boycott our goods.
Ariff: i'm supporting the campaign.
James, PJ: Are you sure? Boycotting US goods and services will hurt us more than it will hurt them. Think about it. We should make sure we are strong enough before making empty threats and statements that will make us look foolish.
