When the world gets complicated and imposes demands on us, we may want to create an oasis within our homes as a retreat. That was what Malaysia Airlines pilot Captain Bob Kamarulzaman and his wife Norajun Ainun Hashim did when they renovated their house.
With the help of architect Mastura Mahayuddin of Affirm Ventures Sdn Bhd, the couple, who leads a hectic lifestyle, built an oasis of peace they can return to after a hard day’s work.
Water, water everywhere
The sound of running water from the pond outside and the vast array of healthy green foliage surrounding the house are an instant balm for tired eyes, frayed nerves and weary souls. The Bermuda grass covering the front lawn provides a cool contrast to the sunny yellow of the exterior walls.
In another corner, one discovers a cascading mini waterfall in a tiered pond against a royal blue backdrop with sandstone features in flower motifs. Palm trees line the walls and pots of water plants break the surface of the pond where the koi reside.
Backyard bliss
In order to enhance their enjoyment of tropical ambience, Bob and Jun have a set of teak chairs and a marble-topped teak table in the patio. The terracotta floor tiles from Spain are the perfect complement for a natural, outdoor look. A pair of wooden semi-reclining chairs from Myanmar faces the pond.
“Actually, this is the family’s favourite spot in the whole house. We always sit here and chat with friends into the wee hours of the night on weekends,” explains Bob.
